Professional Poker Texas Holdem Strategy - Suited Connectors

January 22, 2008

We are going to teach you the advanced texas hold’em strategy referred to as the suited connectors. The suited connectors are cards such as 8 of hearts and 9 hearts. When playing with cards like this you must expect to win the flop in your favor.

This is a very difficult task to complete successful when you play with suited connectors. Now suited connectors give you a chance to win with a flush, a straight or even a straight flush. Learning to play suited connectors is not for a beginner! You must have at the very least mastered the beginner and intermediate strategy.

If you are one of those people who can read your opponents poker face very well then this will help you win with suited connectors. When you attempt to play the suited connector strategy try not to be too aggressive before the flop. Because using this particular strategy can be very risky and the less money you put in the pot the better for you if it doesn’t work.

You need to be very careful when playing your suited connectors, calling too many bets may lead to playing too many hands.

Playing the suited connector style will most likely cause you to lose more pots than you win. That is why you do not want to overload the pot before the flop, you must be patient. Getting more players to put money into the pot can easily turn your profits to a huge gain in the long run.

One of the biggest problems you may see arise with using this style of texas hold’em play is trying to hit your suited connectors with low cards such as a 2 of diamonds and a 3 of diamonds. These hands are easily beaten, this also goes for a straight or even a pair that you may make on the flop. When you decide to play the low suited connectors try to use your ability to read your opponent and don’t hesitate to fold if something doesn’t feel right.

Most poker professionals prefer to play the higher connectors so they have better odds of winning with a straight or a flush. Just how well you have hit the flop will dictate whether you will fold or remain in the hand. For example, if your two hole cards are 8 of clubs, 9 of clubs and the flop comes down 7 of clubs, 10 of clubs and a Queen of hearts then you would certainly keep playing this hand. However if the flop came down 5 of hearts, Q of diamonds and Ace of spades then you should most definitely fold.

Learning to play suited connectors you will need to have the basic understand of pot odds and also you should know and understand the number of outs that you have. This will give you some help when deciding to fold as you will have a clearer idea if you are just chasing a pot or if you have a chance to win it all.

When you are at a friends house, a casino or even the WSOP then you will have no choice but to do these calculations in your head. Playing online will allow you to calculate the odds using your computer but be sure to do this fast enough so your time does not expire. To make sure you get this done quick enough I would use a Poker Odds Calculator such as the one we offer.

Another advanced strategy is Stealing the Blinds. In tight games many players will fold before the flop. If all the players before the button (dealer) fold, oftentimes the player on the button (dealer) will usually raise hoping that the small blind and the big blind will fold. If both the small and big blind do fold, then the player on the button will win the blinds.

The player on the button is said to be in late position. This player is the last to act and has the advantage of watching what the other players do – who bets and how they each react to those bets. By acting last you get a better feel for how strong the other players’ hands are.
